This year's
grant supported Conservation Northwest, the Spokane
Mountaineers, and Washington Trails Association to organize and
participate in nine trail work parties in the Salmo-Priest
Wilderness area on the Colville National Forest in the far
northeast corner of Washington. Approximately 45 volunteers
participated in these work parties, where logging out trails
with crosscut saws and other hand saws was the primary goal. In
addition to the work parties, members of the North Idaho Mule
Club and Forest Service fire fighters opened up several sections
of Wilderness trails. At each of the work parties Conservation
Northwest coordinated and often worked with forest service
recreation staff. Because of these combined efforts, nearly all
of the Salmo-Priest Wilderness Area’s trails were cleared for
the first time in several years.
