Projects for 2008

Icicle River drainage

Washington Trails Association worked in the Icicle River drainage on several occasions throughout the 2008 trail maintenance season.

Snow Lake and the Eightmile Lake trail had over 75 volunteers who accumulated around 930 hours of volunteer work.  The work involved:

  • Maintaining 60-80 large drain dips
  • Brushing and re-establishing tread
  • Removing rock berms
  • Fixing a 40-foot eroded section of trail

Stuart Lake welcomed a crew of volunteers for a week. They began their work 2.5 miles up, and spent their time brushing, maintaining drainages and cleaning culverts.  About a quarter of a mile from the Lake, the crew worked on heavily eroded sections by installing several retaining walls and rock steps.

A small Backcountry Response Team worked on Colchuck Lake.  The main project of this week involved building short switchbacks through a steep 100-foot section of trail which had eroded down to bedrock.  The crew constructed and reconstructed five turns in all.  It was challenging yet also satisfying, and was definitely appreciated by many hikers.
